the carpets soaked up all the pain
the laundry sat alone in the hallway
piled high to the ceiling with shame.
The windows glazed with pity
the floors sticky with despair
the drains clogged with anger
and the foundation beyond repair.
Depression caved the ceiling in
anxiety cracked the tile
hopelessness made the stairs slippery
and the air hung heavy, stagnant, vile.
The pressure burst the pipes
the flood washed away the dirt
the condemnation sticker peeled the paint
as he scraped away the hurt.
An eviction notice was enforced
the framework crumbled to a pile
all the mold, debris and junk hauled off
then the lot lay vacant for a while.
The crew came in and prepped the site
fresh dirt overturned, rocks moved aside
plans plotted out, a mission in place
possibilities endless, doors open wide.
The foundation built, the concrete poured
the frame went up, secure on all sides
piece by piece the vision reviving,
the threshold placed, awaiting his bride.
